This summer will be a hot one for Great Falls High, JROTC students. Thirteen JROTC students will be going to Fort Jackson, June 5th through June 11th. JCLC is a camp for student cadets wanting to better their leadership skills and how to stay hydrated.
The Devils Daily wanted to know what some of the cadets hoped to learn from this experience. Freshman, Carol Horton, said, "I hope to learn how to stay hydrated and I want to learn to break my fear of heights." Sophomore, Brent Blakley, said, "I went last year and I learned that it is very hot at Fort Jackson." Blakley also said, "It is worth spending your time because you meet about 900 new people in a matter of 30 minutes."
The Devils Daily asked teacher, Col. Corral, about what JCLC stands for and its purpose. Corral said, "JCLC stands for JROTC Cadet Leadership Camp and the purpose for this camp is to build leadership skills and to build confidence."
The Devils Daily hopes you have a "hot" summer, JROTC students.

Big Bad Musical Recap
By Tierra Lynn, Emilee Smarr, and Matthew Trent, Great Falls High School, May 6th, 2016
Let's give a big round of applause for an outstanding performance by the Great Falls High School Chorus/Drama1 class on their production, the Big Bad Musical! The musical consisted of students from grades 6-12 and boy, did they do a great job! As a performer myself, I can say that it was an honor to be a part of something so outstanding and fun. The musical was held last night in the Little Theater. The performance, "Big Bad", was directed by our own Mrs. Rachel Hoff.
The Devils Daily staff wanted to know what inspired Mrs. Hoff to put on this outstanding performance. Hoff said, "I had seen the musical performed on the Internet and I saw how funny it was. Therefore, I thought this year's chorus class was a perfect fit for the cast from Big Bad Musical." While the performance was fabulous, the audience doesn't get to see all of the hard work, great effort, trials and tribulations that the cast has to go through. Hoff said, "From the beginning, I feared that people were not going to be able to read without their scripts." Hoff continued, "We had to get a replacement for one of our cast members but we pulled it together and it turned out to be an awesome musical! If I were to change anything, I would have changed the fact that we weren't able to perform the musical school wide or at another time for the community, but I appreciate everyone's hard work and dedication! Everyone was fanatic!"
Senior, Sha'Kiya Cook, was also a part of the musical, "Big Bad". She did a wonderful job as one of the "Wolfettes". Even though she performed flawlessly, it was not as easy as it seemed. Cook said, "The most stressful part of the musical was being able to sing out loud in front of all the people." Yet, Cook faced her fears and showed everyone how to get on the Devil Level!
To Mrs. Hoff and the cast, you all did a wonderful job on the musical! Way to get on the Devil Level!

Red hot stacks: Great Falls to host pancake breakfast
By Emilee Smarr, Matthew Trent, Tierra Lynn, Great Falls High School, May 4th, 2016
This Saturday, May 7, 2016, Coach Duncan will be hosting a pancake breakfast in the cafeteria of Great Falls High School. Everyone is invited to come enjoy all you can eat pancakes, as well as eggs, sausage, toast, fresh fruit, juice, and water, from 8:00 to 11:00am! Tickets cost $5 for students and $8 for the general public.
The Devils Daily interviewed Coach Duncan to learn more about this Saturday's breakfast! All of the funds will be going to the Athletic Department, as stated on the flyer, but Duncan went on to say that the money raised would be going to travel costs for summer athletics. Duncan continued, "Every year, travel and referee costs go up every year. We're trying to deflect the cost from the ticket prices of our sporting events, as well as the pay-to-play fees of our athletes."
Duncan went on to say of the pancake breakfast, "We haven't done a fundraiser like this before in the three years that I've been here. We just wanted to do something different." Duncan said while there's more where that came from, he doesn't want to reveal all of his ideas. He continued saying, "I think that we can get students more involved by possibly implementing a reward system. It'll be easy to increase student involvement as long as we make these fundraisers interesting, unique, and fun."
Duncan's excited and nervous about Saturday's fundraiser event. "I hope that we'll have a great turnout," Duncan said. He's been doing everything he can to promote the event, saying, "We're trying to presale tickets so we can judge how much food we need to buy, both in person and on social media. I put information about the sale on our Twitter page this morning and got retweeted by other users with a hefty follower count, such as the News and Reporter. I'm hoping we'll get even more people from that alone!"
Not only Coach Duncan, but the staff at the Devils Daily hope to see you enjoying some pancakes this Saturday in the high school cafeteria. Come out and support your Red Devil athletes and the Great Falls High School Athletic Department!

Cancer control month
Story by: Camryn Patterson- Editing and Photos: Breanna Hunter and Lydia Mills- April 28, 2016- Great Falls High School.
During the month of April, Camryn Patterson, Lydia Mills and Breanna Hunter hosted a fundraiser at GFHS for National Cancer Control month.
Cancer is a disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body and more than 7.6 million people die from cancer every year. The Devils Daily wanted insight on why the fundraiser was started and if it went on track as planned. Camryn Patterson, fundraiser founder, said, "I wanted to plan a fundraiser for an employee's daughter at GFHS, the mother is close to me, so I wanted to do this for the family. Later, we decided that we would switch to an overall theme of cancer to show respect to anyone else that is suffering with this disease." Lydia Mills, fellow fundraiser founder, said, "We had a lot of help from different people, so getting the fundraiser going was pretty easy." For the fundraiser, there were two different winning positions. One position was a class win and the class that won was Ms. Lindsey Mann's 4th Block class. Way to go Red Devils! The individual that donated the most was Mr. Timothy Bennett, math teacher at Great Falls High. Congratulations! That's a wrap for this GFHS fundraiser! A big thanks to all Great Falls High students that helped control cancer! |

Devils visit Eagles
Story by: Breanna Hunter- Editing and photos by: Camryn Patterson and Lydia Mills- Great Falls High School- April 22, 2016
On April 21, 2016 all freshmen Biology 1 students took a trip to Winthrop to take a closer look at ecosystems, succession, microorganisms, and sampling of Winthrop lake and its wetlands. The Biology students were separated into two different groups. In the first group the students saw different areas of succession and walked one of the many trails at Winthrop woods. The second group looked at the wetlands and lake area to take samples to study under a microscope. After taking the samples at the wetlands and lake all 9th graders were sent inside the Biology lab at Winthrop to take a closer look at the samples under microscopes. While looking under the microscope the students saw small insects that you cannot see with the naked eye. To put an end to an amazing trip the students went on a relaxing walk around Winthrop across Scholar's Walk. Lastly, the trip came to a stop at CiCi's pizza, where the kids enjoyed the food and the many arcade games. The freshmen really enjoyed the trip to Winthrop, it was a great way to get to experience being a Biologist! |

Fine Arts wonders
Story by Dixie Roberts - photos and editing by Kayla Pettit
The Devils Daily clubs and Orgs group wanted to learn more about the Great Falls Fine Arts Festival that was on April 12, 2016. The Devils Daily Journalist interviewed Ms. Brenda Fort, let's see what she said. Mrs. Brenda Fort, Mrs. Rachel Hoff, Mr. Joseph Miller, and Mrs. Janet Hall were involved in the Great Falls Fine Arts Show.
Mrs. Fort said of helping create the program, "Great Falls High School 6-12 is so fortunate to be able to offer a full spectrum of the arts to our students."
Mrs. Fort likes that people are able to have a way to express themselves through Art, Chorus, Band, and, thanks to Ms. Minter, Cardio-Line dancing. These activities also keep kids occupied and help them take more of an interest in school.
She wants to celebrate talented artists who participate in our arts programs. She loves the arts and artists. Her minor in college was art history and she also loves the theater and music.
During the Fine Arts Festival you could walk around the hall looking at the art, but that's not all there was to see. Our Great Falls High School Band, Chorus, and Cardio-Line dancing also performed for hundreds of parents, teachers, and friends.
The 6th grade band played a few songs that were really good. The High School band also played some songs about a dragon coming and destroying a village and when the people start to slay the dragon.
The chorus did a scene from their play The Big Bad Musical and they sang Imagine while some signed it in sign language. They also had the middle school chorus singing in the cafeteria before the program started.
The Cardio-Line dance group danced to a couple of songs which were really awesome. It got the crowd excited and more interested in the arts.
We think that everyone should enjoy the different types of arts we have in our school. If you have a talent like dancing, singing, drawing, or playing an instrument, don't be afraid to join the classes and help out the school. Embrace who you are and get on stage. You never know how good you are until you try.

ART, ART, AND MORE ART!!
By: Kayla Pettit, Video and editing by: Kayla Pettit and Dixie Roberts
Art has been around for many years, but not many people take the time to actually stop and look at it.
Not many people attend the art class at Great Falls High and we believe it's because they don’t really know about it.
The Devils Daily interviewed the art teacher at Great Falls High to find out what the art program is doing and why she wanted to major in art.
Ms. Hall, the art teacher at Great Falls teaches 6th - 12th graders different types of art and lets them do hands on activities. Ms. Hall said that each grade learns something different, no class is the same. She said that the kids seemed to enjoy the class and love doing the hands on activities the most.
Who wouldn’t want to learn about the different types of art, do hands on activities, and learn about how art has changed from back in the day until now?

Story by: Dixie Roberts, Pictures and editing by: Kayla Pettit, Dixie Roberts, and Mrs. Mills
Students of Great Falls High do you want a sneak peek of this year's 2016 yearbook and save a little cash? Mrs. Shannon Mills and Katlyn Albert gave out a postcard coupon with pictures from this year's yearbook. You can save $5 off your yearbook or if you have already bought one, you can use this coupon to get a free nameplate. That’s too cool right?!
The Devils Daily Clubs and Orgs wanted to get more information about the new postcards for this years yearbook, so we asked Mrs. Mills some questions.
Mrs. Mills said she wanted to do the postcards to give people a sneak peek of what's in the yearbook, and to catch the students' attention. She later said that she hopes the postcards will be worthwhile and that the students will buy so many yearbooks that they will have to order more.
Mrs. Mills said, "The yearbooks are so fun to make, but are a lot of hard work so she wants students to buy them."
If you buy your yearbook anytime this month your name will be put into a drawing, and you could possibly get your money back if you are picked!
This year will be gone in a flash, so buy your one of a kind, specially made 2016 yearbook before it's too late!

The solo roles in The Big Bad Wolf will be Tasia Dye, Ricky Harris, Jessica Dutton, Zyderrick Jordan. The duet roles will be Sarah Taylor and Brittney Sweat. The Devils Daily asked Mrs. Hoff is it a Middle or High School musical? She told the Devils Daily, "It is a high school show, but middle schoolers are going to be in it." Story by: Lydia Mills-Photos and Editing by: Camryn Patterson-Great Falls High School-March 16, 2016
On Monday March 14, 2016, Matthew Trent made an Instagram and Snapchat for the Devils Daily, so students can check out new updates and have a behind the scene view of the newsroom.
The Devils Daily asked a group of red devils if they had any suggestions to promote the Devils Daily newspaper, there were various answers such as, to show how the students relate to the newspaper, more sports, and more information about the school. Students were asked if they would follow the Devils Daily Instagram and Snapchat, there were answers that ranged from, "sure" to "yes" and "I already have." When asked by the Devils Daily if people thought it was a good idea to mix the school newspaper with social media, Dustin Smith, 9th grader, said, " Yes, it makes it easier for people to get the information," and Peyton Bruce, 9th grader, said, "Yes, because no one pays attention to regular newspaper anymore." The Devils Daily newspaper Snapchat and Instagram code is : gfhsdevilsdaily . There are no caps and there is nothing extra. Check around the school for more information about the code or see Matthew Trent. Get on the devil level, and get in check with the Devils Daily! |
Student council meet at Lewisville
By: Camryn Patterson - Photos and editing by: Lydia Mills
On March 10th, Great Falls High student council traveled to Lewisville to meet the new intern attendant and to discuss school matters.
While at the meet, the council discussed short and long time goals, and things that should be improved for the different schools of Chester County.
They also got to know the new intern attendant, told things about them-selves individually and talked about the wonderful things at the different schools.
A red devil council member spoke out saying a bigger sprit rock was needed at our school. During the request, members of Lewisville made a joke about the time they spray painted the 'Red Hot' rock.
Student council president, Brandon Christopher, got very offended and spoke his mind about them vandalizing our school's rock.
Christopher said " We asked for a bigger rock and some people from Lewisville made joke about how they wrote on it."
In the end, the meeting was a success! Let's give a red devil applause for Great falls student council.

The Devils Daily interviewed 9th grader Landon Digh and 9th grader Aubrey Rowles about their experience with Academic Challenge. Some words they described about the team were interesting, fun, and challenging. Digh told the Devils Daily that his favorite memory during the season was "getting to ride in a car with, Coach Mr. Tisdale." While similar to Digh, Rowles said her favorite memory was riding in a van with Mrs. Fort. Digh and Rowles agreed their highlight of the season would probably be the festival, where the team got to compete with other teams in a chance to move up in the bracket. Digh told the Devils Daily the overall score for the academic challenge team was 10. Way to go Academic Challenge Team! Until next year, keep studying! |

New student section name
Writing, video, and editing by Matthew Trent and Hannah McCormick
Basketball coach, Jimmy Duncan, and Sophomore, Matthew Trent, recently decided to name the student section for the 2016-2017 year. The student section was a place to be during the football and basketball games. With the students continuing every week without a name, Duncan and Trent decided that the students needed a name.
Trent sent out a survey to the school, asking for suggestions about the name. Some of the students came up with different ideas.
Freshman, Justin Kolasz, suggested "Devil Squad," Junior, Clayce Reid, suggested "Red Devil Legion."
When Devils Daily interviewed Student Section Leader Matthew Trent on how they will choose the name, Trent responded, "We will look at what fits the theme of our student section and how we can bring the name to life next year."
Duncan and Trent will announce the name of the student section soon.

JROTC students teach Junior Achievement
Writing by Hannah McCormick- Photos and Editing by Matthew Trent – February 26, 2016.
JROTC members Kayla Pettit, Nijawon Trapp, Alex Black, Seth Suter, Mekayla Hauanio, Ariyon Gaither, and Rajean Perry started teaching elementary school kids Monday, February 22nd.
JROTC members will be going to the elementary school for the next five weeks on Mondays to talk to the little ones about community finances, taxes, and what jobs are offered and so on. The Devils Daily caught up with Seth Suter and asked how he thought Junior Achievement would help the elementary school students. Suter said he believes it would help them understand "the gradual concept of money and jobs that may be offered later in life." This is a great opportunity for JROTC members to learn better leadership and responsibility skills. Teaching others is not an easy job, but the JROTC members at Great Falls High always step up to the challenge. The Devils Daily know they will do great and we wish you the best of luck. Remember to stay on the devil level JROTC members! |

Middle school clubs are important too
Written by: Tierra Lynn - Edited by: Geni Camp - Photos By: Breanna Hunter - Great Falls High school - February 18, 2016
Recently Great Falls Middle School has added some new clubs to their school. Most of the students in middle school say they like the new clubs that the middle school has added. Some of the clubs include the game Club (playing board games), lazer picture club, robotics club, and creative writing club.
We asked about the clubs and why teachers and staff think they're important. Ms. Davies, one of the clubs leaders said, "The teachers would like to do more than just teach, they would like to be more involved with the students and give them the enjoyment of clubs at the school."
Middle school student, Mi'Keveon Walls, is in the games club and said, "I enjoy being in the club and I enjoy the games we play."
But does there need to be any change? Walls said, "No, I like the clubs as they are now."

In the past year, Great Falls High School received a new addition to the red devil family…Mr. Joseph Miller. Mr. Miller comes from Columbia where he previously studied music all of his life. When interviewed about the band, Miller said, "I hope that this year, everybody learns music and progresses on their instruments. I don't feel like it's my first year. I've been a musician all my life, and I've been around people all my life. This isn't any different, people are people, these are just different people."
Miller has been very successful in his first year at GFH. Mrs. Fort believes, "Mr. Miller has made a living playing music. He adds not only an aesthetic feeling, but also a positive one. He has begun rebuilding the great band program GFH once had. Since his arrival many students who are not prone to participating in school activities have been very eager to sign up for marching band."
Upcoming in the band, they will be performing in the Spring Arts Festival on April 22nd and the Carowinds festival of music. Our band here at GFH has always been record-breaking, and with the help of Mr. Miller, everyone truly believes we can rebuild this program to its former glory. Great job, Mr. Miller. We wish you and the band the best of luck!

The Spanish Honors Society

Mr. Antonio Artis, the new Spanish teacher at Great Falls High School, says, "The Spanish Honors Society is under development. I am currently thinking of ways to bring fresh ideas to the society to get the members even more excited about Spanish and Hispanic culture."
Artis also said, "When choosing who to be in the Spanish Honors Society I have to look at a lot of things." First he looks at the actual grades of the students. Those who have strong A and B averages show that they can handle themselves with the topics covered in class. After analyzing those grades, invitations will be sent out to see if they are interested in joining.
Artis will also speak to individual students after noticing that they have a vast interest in the language as well as the culture. Seeing that they are interested in the subject, he will extend an invitation to them as well to keep them working with Spanish.
This year there hasn’t been any meeting for the society. Artis said, "There has not been any meeting yet due to the fact that I am still working on the direction I want the Spanish Honor Society to take."
When all the details are completed the Spanish Honor Society will start having meetings.

Importance of Student Council
By: Tierra Lynn and Breanna Hunter , Great falls High School, Feb. 10th 2016
Great Falls High school has an amazing student council. The Student Council has four officers and six representatives. The President is Brandon Christopher, the Vice President is Nichole Crist, the Secretory is Aryion Gaither, and the Treasure is Sha'Kiya Cook. The four officers including the reps make up one of the best student councils because they are the voice of our Great Falls High students all at once.
Mrs. Teresa Freeman, the Student Council Supervisor, said, "Student Council is one of the important things that a high school needs. It's the voice of the students and helps a lot with asking questions about things the Great Falls High student body wants to do." Student Council member, Matthew Trent, said, "He enjoys being a part of student council because you have the privilege to voice the entire student body's opinion and try to make changes everyone wants. As a bonus it looks good on a college application." |

Does Great Falls need more clubs?
By: Tierra Lynn and Breanna Hunter - Great falls High School - February 3, 2016
We took a survey wanting to know if the students of Great Falls High want more clubs to be involved in at school.
We think that some new clubs added to our school would be fun for some people that don’t really have anything to do in their spare time. It could take some time off your hands and could keep some people out of trouble. Being in a club of some sort can help you try something new and you may be surprised about what you actually like.
Some suggestions from fellow Red Devils were Dance Club, paintball club, Drama Club, science club, and a couple more great ideas. Check them out!
Senior, Mariana Crank, said, "I think we should have a Yoga club, Dinner club, and outing club!"
Some responses were for the guys. Junior, Davon Stinson, said, "I think some good ideas for school wide clubs are Guy clubs and a paint ball club."
Some responses were very inspiring. Freshmen, Jazmine Floyd, said, "I think there should be a Teenagers facing problems at early life club." This would be something that people could go to if they need to talk or need help with something.
The general opinion about having more clubs was positive. Sophomore, Geni Camp, said, "I think we should have clubs in Great Falls High because everyone needs something fun they like to do in their spare time."
So many club suggestions so many to choose from. Let's hope we can get the idea across to teachers and students and start something new!

BETA club just keeps on giving
By: Brittney Sweat, Sam Mendoza, and Kayla Pettit - Great Falls High School - January 29, 2015
BETA club is known for helping with their volunteer work. This time, they are taking it a little further by helping out with senior projects.
"We help the seniors with giving them extra hands with whatever they need", said senior, Pierce Funderburk. With seniors having to get as much help as they can get, BETA club really tries to provide the help the seniors need. "We helped Mariana Crank and Sarah Reeves by donating materials they asked for," said junior, Titanna Gladden. The students in BETA club like to help people just to give back but little do they know, it will leave a print on them forever. "I wanted to be in BETA club because it looks good on my transcript for college, but it has taught me to be a better person", said Drew Beaver, senior and President of BETA club. To help further, this Spring the BETA club has helped Janai Mckinstry significantly by donating materials that the Chester Regional Nursing Center needs, such as lotion, soap, gloves/hats, brushes, etc. She had a whole box and two bags full of materials that were donated by the BETA club. |
Who really gets the yearbook done?
Story by: Kayla Pettit - Photographs and editing by: Brittney Sweat and Sam Mendoza - Great Falls High - January 25, 2016
In the Spring, the yearbook is still hard at work. The Yearbook club is a yearlong class, divided by semesters. The fall portion had a full class, but the spring only has two people, Katlyn Albert and Mrs. Shannon Mills. They meet during 2nd period to work on and go over what's going on this semester. The Yearbook goes around interviewing people, taking photos, and capturing the moments that will mean the most to us when we're out of school.
"I think yearbook is fun because I get to take pictures of random people and get to know them," said Albert.
Albert also said, "The most challenging thing about yearbook is trying to remember names and spelling them."
Albert went on to say, "During the fall, I focus on reaching early deadlines, while in the Spring, I focus on finishing up pages and reaching late deadlines."
Mills said, " Sometimes it is hard getting pictures you need for a couple reasons. Some people love to have their picture taken while others, not so much. Sometimes events only happen once, like a pageant, and you have to be extra prepared to get the pictures. With a yearbook, you are constantly working with deadlines and coordinating events and your deadlines can be tricky."
Mills later said, "In the Spring, it is a race to get the last pages done for the yearbook. For Instance, all of the Spring sports have to be photographed and pages have to be done. Our deadline for the yearbook is around the middle of February and many of these events are just getting started."
When everything is completed all there is left to do is wait for Yearbooks to arrive.
