Video and story by: Abby Hopper - December 8, 2015
December 5th, 2015 at 5 PM, Great Falls held its annual Christmas in the Park function at the War Memorial building in town. John Royce Hall, a junior and attendee to Christmas in the park, said, "It was fun and I had a phenomenal time. I am ready for next year's." There were numerous activities to participate in at the event. There were bouncy houses for the children and different booths outside and inside that were selling different Christmas items. The Great Falls Middle School chorus sang a couple of songs as well at the event. Overall, it was a great time with good people. We will definitely be looking forward to next year's Christmas in the Park! |

Make way for senior projects
Video and story by: Tiambre Talford - December 3, 2015
Half way through the 2015 - 16 school year, senior projects start to come to an end. Senior projects are projects that every senior at Great Falls High school has to complete before they graduate. It consists of doing research, completing an outline, writing a five-page research paper, and planning an event (product) to present. Earlier this week seniors were assigned to do a practice run of their senior project presentations. The PowerPoint presentation has to be at least 10 minutes long and students must maintain eye contact. The objective of doing a senior project is to see how well the student did with planning and organizing their event or product. Some examples of products have been Sickle Cell Anemia walk, March of Dime walk, teaching a class, and Red Ribbon Week. By doing the practice run of the presentations, it gives the students a preview of what it will be like during the presentation in front the judges. Which will be held on December 9, 2015. Mrs. Renwick, English IV teacher points out the fact that she is extremely proud of her second block class and they have a better understanding of needing to slow down in delivery of their speeches. For next year's upcoming seniors, Renwick stated "since adding the argument and counterargument components, nothing big will change for next year as far as the student work is concerned." Shai'darius Brown did his senior project on literacy and had to read to the third graders at the elementary school who have trouble with reading comprehension and understanding text. After completing his presentation, he said, "I was very nervous while presenting my presentation, but once I started my classmates made me feel comfortable." Once senior projects have been judged students are graded on how well they showed their work through their products. They take these skills and use them later in life. |

Let's thank Rose Parks: The story behind the bus
By: Nauria Wilmore - December 1, 2015
It is National Rosa Parks Day! Born on February 4th, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama, Rosa Parks is famous for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a public bus during the days of segregation. After this happened,
Montgomery, Alabama, spurred on a citywide boycott and helped launch nationwide efforts to end segregation of public facilities.
In some states, such as California and Missouri, Rosa Parks Day is celebrated on her birthday February 4th. In Ohio and Oregon it is celebrated on the day she got arrested, December 1st. The Rosa Parks Day was created by the California State Legislature and was first celebrated in 2000.
Rosa Parks later said,"I had not planned to get arrested. I had plenty to do without having to end up in jail. But when I had to face that decision, I didn’t hesitate to do so because I felt that we had endured that too long. The more we gave in, the more we complied with that kind of treatment, the more oppressive it became.”
Speaking with Diamond White, a junior at Great Falls High, she said, "I personally think Rosa Parks did the right thing by giving up her seat because they were trying to take advantage of her because of her skin color."
Lele Fredrick, senior at GFH, also said, "Rosa Parks did a wonderful thing by not giving up her seat on the bus. This changed a lot of people's lives. There shouldn’t be a certain place that you have to sit because of color and I thank her for that."
Rosa Parks played a huge role in my life. I've ridden the bus to school and back up until my high school years of school! If it wasn’t for her I would not be able to sit with all of my friends wherever we desired.
Take out time today and thank Rosa Parks!

Cyber Monday sales
By: Tiambre Talford - December 1, 2015
As it gets closer and closer to Christmas, discounts and sales start to roll into stores. On Monday, November 30th one of the largest online sales, Cyber Monday, started. According to How Stuff Works, in the United States, retailers designated the Monday after Thanksgiving as a day for exceptional bargains online.
The article also states "Cyber Monday" was created by marketing companies to persuade people to shop online. Cyber Monday was coined by Ellen Davis on November 28, 2005 in a Shop press release entitled "Cyber Monday Quickly Becoming One of the Biggest Online Shopping Days of the Year."
On this day, people are able to buy Christmas gifts for their family and friends at the prices they can afford. Some websites that benefit from Cyber Monday are Amazon, JC Penny, Walmart, and many more.
Ariyon Gaither, senior at Great Falls High School, says, "Cyber Monday is way better than black Friday because there is no one getting in your way and you can stay at home."
So next year don't forget about the great deals and discounts that Cyber Monday has to offer!

Miss Great Falls High pageant
Story and video by: Nauria Wilmore and Tiambre Talford - November 24, 2015
Saturday, November 21st at 6:00pm, Great Falls High School held their annual beauty pageant. The girls performed an opening act dance and after their dance it was time for the casual wear. Each girl showed off their outfits, which consisted of jeans, preppy tops, pumps, sneakers and other amazing things that we would wear to school or out with our friends. After casual wear, the audience got to see our queens once again, but this time in the fantastic formal wear.
Toward the end, the judges carried on counting their votes while guests had intermission. Tamyia Cloud was chosen as Miss 9th grade, Genesis Camp as Miss 10th grade, Christian Boyd Miss 11th grade, and Essence Jenkins as Miss 12th grade. First runner up was Ms. Raven Duncan. Lastly, Miss Great Falls High was Brooke Kirkland.

Southern Christmas show
Video and story by: Candace Baker and Abby Hopper - November 23, 2015
Everyone needs a day off sometimes. Abby Hopper and Candace Baker took one to attend the Southern Christmas Show on Friday November 20th. This was their first time going to the show and they had a great time.
When entering the building there was a huge Christmas wreath perfect for picture taking. Then there were Christmas trees and music everywhere. The Christmas atmosphere was all around and it’s not even Thanksgiving yet! Tons and tons of vendors were on every corner waiting for shoppers to come.
The vendors merchandise consisted of clothes, toys, decorations, and, of course, food. It’s hard to leave the show hungry when every food vendor lets you sample their fixings. It was a great experience.
While Abby and Candace enjoyed most of the vendors there, there were a few that stood out to them. The vendors were the Sheep Incognito art showcase by Connie Togel and the Santa photo booth, which raised money for the Shriners Children’s Hospital. The Santa-photo booth also handed out candy canes to those who purchased their pictures.
Through the shopping, eating, and getting to meet and share Christmas spirit with new people the girls had an absolutely fabulous time and are definitely planning on attending next year’s show!

Chick-n-que closing
By: Tiambre Talford - November 5, 2015
Last week, the people of Great Falls were surprised by the news that Chic-n-Que closed down. The restaurant was new to Great Falls and the food was good. So the question is why did they close down? Students who work at the restaurant stated that they didn’t know that it would be closing down. Some just arrived at work and noticed that it was closed. Here is how some of the employees of Chic-n-Que feel about losing their job.

Election Day
By: Abby Hopper - October 3, 2015
Today, Tuesday November 3, 2015, is Election Day. But we're not voting on our next president of course. In her article about getting ready to vote, Stephanie Drahan says, "As with any election year, it is important for voters, like you, to feel prepared to participate in the elections happening in your community."
Even though this is not the presidential election, there are still thousands of important elections nationwide that are taking place today.
Great Falls does not have any elections going on today, but there are several other cities in South Carolina who are having elections today: Charleston, North Charleston, Aiken, Greenville, and Summerville.
According to Wikipedia, people refer to today’s election as General Election Day. General Election day is always held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The elections that take place on general Election Day will very rarely feature any election to a federal office, state legislative elections, and gubernatorial elections. The elections that do take place on General Election Day are more mayoral, citizen initiatives in various states, and other local public offices.
"I think voting is important because it is your voice in the government, if you don’t vote then don’t complain." says, David Spenser, Assistant Principle here at GFH. Remember to support and motivate everyone you know to vote! Help make a change in local governments everywhere.

Taking big steps for tiny feet
By: Tiambre Talford - November 3, 2015
In November, people are only aware of the fact that it is the season to give thanks. But what they don’t know is that November is also National Prematurity Month. According to the March of Dimes website, an estimated 15 million babies around the world are born premature each year and more than one million of them do not survive their early birth.
Prematurity Awareness Month events are scheduled nationwide throughout November. The Empire State Building in New York City, will be shining in purple light to symbolize hope for a healthy start for more babies. In addition, November 17th will be recognized around the world as the fourth annual World Prematurity Day.
Last week, I hosted a March of Dimes walk to raise awareness for premature birth and birth defects. The event was very successful and I think everyone enjoyed themselves.
So don’t just gives thanks this thanksgiving. Take time to show awareness for premature babies by wearing purple or donating!

Red Ribbon Week for the Red Devils
By: Candace Baker - October 29, 2015
It is Red Ribbon week here at Great Falls High School and we want to see you get excited about living a drug-free life!
All week long the middle and high schools have been celebrating. Pride groups have been decorating their doors for awareness, students have hopefully made the pledge to live a drug-free life, and there are red ribbons everywhere with the theme this year being "Respect Yourself!"
All of the things happening this week are thanks to Essence Patterson and her mentor, Ms. Bergmann. They have worked very hard making flyers and preparing this week. So show your school spirit by participating!
Don’t forget that we celebrate this week in honor of Kiki Camarena, for more information on his sacrifice read Candace Baker’s article Red Ribbon week? More important than we thought here on the Devil's Daily.
Friday is the time to show your Red Devil spirit by ending this week wearing all red. We expect to see everyone celebrating Red Ribbon week in all red at school and at Lewisville Friday night!

Trick or Treat vs Trunk or Treat
By: Abby Hopper - October 27, 2015
It's almost that time again. This Saturday is Halloween and The Devil Daily's staff wants to know whether you'll be "Trick or Treating" or "Trunk or Treating"! We all know the traditional "Trick or Treating" is where you go from house to house trying to fill up your candy bag to the most it can hold, but others may be spending their Halloween night walking from car to car, trunk to trunk, receiving candy as well. This Saturday at 5:30 anyone and everyone is welcome to come out to trunk or treat at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center, for games, food, and always the candy, that will be being passed out from everyone who participates, themed trunks. Whatever you are planning on doing this chilling Halloween night we hope you have a blast and stay safe!
Be aware of the breasts
By: Candace M. Baker
One in eight women are diagnosed with Breast Cancer, as a community it is our job to raise awareness about this terrible disease. There are so many things we can do to prevent this disease and it starts here!
First we have to have an understanding of what Breast Cancer is, in order to do that read Candace Baker’s last article Breast Cancer is among us right here on The Devil's Daily.
Once you have an understanding of the disease you will need to be self-aware, you can do this by doing self-exams and getting yearly mammograms. For more information on self-exams you can read Baker’s article or check out the internet. Hate to break it to you, but you can’t change the world alone.
After you are self-aware, you need to encourage others to be so. Making sure that your closest friends and family members do self-exams could save a life. Don’t stop there, encourage anyone and everyone to do this!
After everyone is self-aware you will all need to support those who do suffer. Most people do this by donating money. There are a lot of foundations that you can donate money to such as: Breast Cancer Research Foundation, The Rose, National Breast Cancer Foundation, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, and so many more!
Another way to show your support is simply showing that you care by going to visit Breast Cancer patients. These patients love to have visitors and receive the smallest of gifts. Giving them flowers, balloons, candy, or even a book could make their day.
Surely you have seen pink all around you since it is October, National Breast Cancer Awareness month. A great way to raise awareness and show support is to get in with this October trend! We can start here at Great Falls High school by wearing pink on October 23 and buying a ticket for $1 to walk at 2:15, a large percentage of proceeds will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and the rest will help out the Journalism program at Great Falls High School.
Here’s a recap: to raise Breast Cancer Awareness you need to have an understanding of the disease. Then you need to be self-aware and make others self-aware as well. Then you need to show your support, and you can start here with the Red Devils. THINK PINK!

Who will win? Softball or baseball?
By: Abby Hopper - October 20, 2015
Come out and support! This Saturday, October 24th, Katlyn Albert, senior at Great Falls High, will be holding a softball vs. baseball game for her senior project. The game will take place at Minors Park Complex and will start around 11 AM.
There will be a $4 entrance fee to watch the game. Supporters of softball and baseball alike will be selling drinks, chips, and hot dogs, during the game. They will also be selling raffle tickets, $2 a piece, for a $100 gift card to Dick's Sporting Goods! All profits will go towards new equipment for our very own Lady Devils Softball team.
Albert said the reason she chose to do this for her senior project was because “I want to give softball the same opportunity and recognition as baseball here at Great Falls.” The game was originally going to be played by the baseball team and the softball team only, but depending on the number of people who show, those who will play will be decided this Saturday. It will be a slow pitch game, where all the boys will bat opposite of what they normally bat and all of the softball infielders will wear face masks during the game.
If the boys happen to win the game they will receive 10% of the profits made that day. Sophomore, Koby Ruff, said, “I don’t have a specific strategy for the game, I just plan on going out there and hitting dingers.”
So come out and support your fellow class mate this Saturday at Great Falls High and enjoy an entertaining and competitive game!

October is all about PINK
By: Tiambre Talford - October 8, 2015
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the terrible disease. Most people are aware of breast cancer, but many people forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in its early stages and encourage others to do the same.
To show our support of breast cancer the Devil's Daily Staff has put together some fundraisers to help show awareness for those affected by breast cancer.
On October 16th, the Devil's Daily will be hosting Remember the Brave, where students will be able to write their loved ones names, or names in honor of those still fighting the disease, on a banner and pay 50 cents for a breast cancer awareness pink ribbon.
Then the following week, October 23rd will be a Pink Out! for Great Falls High. The 4th block class with the most pink pride for breast cancer awareness will win a Krispy Kreme donuts!
On this day, we will also be hosting a walk for the cure during 4th block. Any student wanting to attend will need to pay $1 to Ms. Bergmann or any other Devil's Daily Staff Member (Candace Baker, Abby Hopper, Tiambre Talford, or Nauria Wilmore).
So save the dates and show your school spirit by helping to bring awareness to this horrible disease. Don’t forget to get on the devil level and THINK PINK!

And the winner is......
By: Tiambre Talford - September 29, 2015
A night of bouquets and crowns sadly resulted in a loss for the Great Falls Red Devils on Friday, September 25th. But for Nicole Crist, it was definitely a victory. Crist won Great Falls High School's 2015 Homecoming Queen title. Runner-Up was Morgan Lubojacky and Team Sweetheart, who was chosen by the football team, was Brooke Kirkland. Everyone who attended homecoming looked amazing, but of course not everyone could be a winner.
Nicole Crist was asked how it feels to be the 2015 Homecoming Queen. She replied, "I feel very honored to have the privilege to be homecoming queen among a group of girls that are very successful." Here all about! Constitution Day breakdown
By: Nauria Wilmore - September 17,2015
Hey!
Are you aware of Constitution Day? Well according to the Wikipedia database,
"Constitution Day(or Citizenship Day) is an American federal observance
that recognizes the adoption of the United States constitution and those who
have become U.S citizens." Constitution Day is celebrated every 17th of
September. It comes from the significant day in history when convention members
signed the document in 1787. In
addition, Wikipedia notes that "the law establishing the present holiday
was created in 2004."
In an article in the New York Times online, Kathryn Kolbert notes that "Constitution Day is an opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge of the Constitution, with its short elegant language and its far reaching ramifications that have both shaped our history and our lives." And Great Falls Middle/High School has done just that today.
Tammy Schofield, teacher at Great Falls Middle, said that "On September 17, 2015, all schools in South Carolina who receive any federal funds must celebrate Constitution Day. In an effort to help SC educators, each year I send out a chart with recommendations to help them prepare lessons for that day." Mrs. Schofield also encouraged teachers at Great Falls to look at all of the following sources she provided:

MAP testing
By: Nauria Wilmore - September 8, 2015
All students, except
seniors, at Great Falls High School will be taking the MAP test on Wednesday,
September 9th and Thursday, September 10th. Wednesday will be the English
portion followed by the Math portion on Thursday. Mr. David Spencer, vice principal of GFH,
stated that "the MAP Test is basically a test that measures student
ability." The goal is to identify individual needs and weaknesses so that
teachers can work with students and be able to improve particular weak areas in
English and Math.
Mr. Bennett, a math teacher of GFH, said, "I love MAP testing. I love it so much that I wish we had it for all subjects. It shows students' progress and it gives us a baseline from the beginning of the year to the end."
Bennett also stated that "as teachers we look at the scores to see their strong side and weak side, and to see how effective we [teachers] were."
Preparing for the MAP test has the same techniques as other tests. Getting a good night's rest and a good breakfast is very important. Being nervous is another thing. Don’t be too nervous about MAP testing. Practice makes perfect.

The latest technology at GFH

To start the 2015-16
school year students came back to discover that they would no longer be
receiving the HP Tablets and that they would be receiving laptops for the
year. According to The Charlotte
Observer, "Schools around the world are embracing technology more and more
each year to try to better equip students for the world in which they
live." Statistics show that laptops are more fun for students than simply
sitting at a desk and listening to a lecture with a pad of paper and a pen.
To get students opinions on the laptops, DeAndre Perry, a senior at GFHS was asked how having the laptops in class has improved his way of learning. In response, he said, "It has improved my way of learning because everything is more hands on and when writing is involved there isn't much to write." Perry was also asked whether he thought the laptops were a good idea for the school. He replied, "Yes, because I don’t have to worry about carrying such a heavy load of books."
Another GFH student, Warren Sanders, also a senior, was asked some of the same questions about GFH's new technology. He noted that "it has improved my way of learning a lot and it keeps me focused on my work".
In addition, Sanders indicated the same feelings as Perry saying that "he thinks the laptops are good for the school because they are light [weight]."
Perry and Sanders also thought about the old and new technology and decided that the new tablets “freeze up a lot, but they would still take the laptops over the HP tablets.”
The new technology has made learning a lot easier and taking in information a lot faster.

Metal detectors at GFH
By: Tiambre Talford - August 27, 2015
At the beginning of
the school year students were shocked to see that metal detectors were put in
at the main entrances of the school.
According to NBC News, "Hundreds of American schools have added
tighter security since 1999's attack at Colorado's Columbine High School."
In addition, as indicated by a joint report of the Departments of Education and
Justice, violent crime overall has declined since the early and mid-1990s.
However, this decline is relatively small.
To investigate the new security around school, Mr. David Spencer, assistant principal at Great Falls High School, was asked when the metal detectors were installed. In response, he noted that they were installed the summer before school started, indicating this past 2015 summer. When Spencer was also asked about we now have metal detectors he replied, "The metal detectors are not necessarily for the students. They are for nonstudent visitors."
Tierra Lynn, a senior at Great Falls High School, was asked how she felt about the metal detectors and responded, "I feel that they are very useful because they can detect anyone who has a concealed weapon, but there is no one standing at the door to catch anyone if they do have a weapon''. Lynn was also asked if she feels safer at school knowing we have metal detectors. She replied, "Yes, I feel safer because no one can bring in a weapon and I don’t have to worry about anyone getting hurt."
