Looking through the lights
Final project and video by: Abby Hopper - December 17, 2015
The Riverbanks Zoo and Garden's “Lights Before Christmas" is not only the zoos longest tradition, but also Columbia’s longest running holiday tradition . Lights Before Christmas has been open since November 26th, and will continue to stay open until December 30th from 5 PM to 9 PM. The admission fee is ten dollars for adults while children ages two to twelve is eight dollars. Leslie W. reviews on Judy's Book, that, "The Christmas time Winter Wonderland with lights is pretty good too. It's nice and festive." This attraction has been and continues to be so popular due to the nearly one million twinkling lights that are put out on display every year. There are also numerous animated images and nightly visits with good ole’ Saint Nick himself. The Jingle Bell Bonfire is lit every night as well, so you can create those warm memories with your close ones. Hot cocoa, marshmallows, and other festive foods can be purchased throughout the zoo as well. While there might be some night owls out during your trip, most of the animals will be out of their exhibits catching up on some much needed sleep. In her article "Where to see holiday lights around Columbia", Erin Shaw says, "Lights Before Christmas at the Riverbank Zoo and Garden is [her] number two pick of places to go see Christmas lights." If you plan on attending Lights Before Christmas this year, don’t forget to bundle up and get ready to make some warm and fun memories. We hope you have a blast! Resources Shaw, Erin. Skating our way to Christmas break
Final project and video by: Candace Baker - December 17, 2015
Looking for something to do over Christmas break? Sitting around drinking hot chocolate with a side of Christmas movies is totally acceptable. But for those who want a little more, the City of Rock Hill along with Founders Federal Credit Union and the Old Town Association have the perfect option - ice skating! It's not just your everyday indoor ice skating that your little cousin drags you to every year for a birthday party. It is real outdoor ice skating that will give you the feel of skating over a real frozen body of water. Those in charge have the ice rink to give back to the community and celebrate the holiday season. The ice rink is located at 205 Saluda Street and is adjacent to the Fountain Park surrounded by holiday lights. Admission is $10, which includes your skates. However, for a group of fifteen or more, admission is only $8! Anyone is more than welcome to come embrace the holiday spirit while watching others skate for free. There is an area beside the rink with picnic tables and benches for those who want to watch the skaters. There is also a tiny playhouse at the entrance that Santa and Mrs. Claus sit outside of for pictures and Christmas wish lists, of course. Middle school students, Sarah Baker and Taylor Dixon, went to this same rink last year and had a great time when they returned this year. The girls plan to go every year, making it a Christmas tradition. The ice rink hours are as follows: Tuesday - Thursday: 4 - 9 pm Fridays: 4 –10 pm Saturdays: 10 am – 10 pm Sundays: 11-8 pm Of course, it would be rude to send anyone in the rink without testing it out first. So, I went myself and had an amazing experience filled with holiday cheer. Check out the video to the right: |
