Give me a D-E-V-I-L!

This past Monday, May 9th, Spring practice for the Varsity cheerleaders started. Being a cheerleader myself, I was very excited to start the new season and see so many new faces ready to join the squad.
Cheerleading has always been an important part of Great Falls High School. Since our team has always had a history of doing well in all areas dealing with physical activity, cheerleaders are here to maintain the spirit level already present in our devils. Our captains last year, Ariyon Gaither and Nicole Crist, made sure that our team was always game ready. Whether it was making sure our bows were straight or making sure our toe-touches were "on fleek" and they never failed to test us to our limits every single Friday night. I gave some insight to the Devils Daily. "Cheerleading is a major part of my high school career. I made lots of friendships with girls I had never even talked to before. I think every girl should be a cheerleader because it is aa great way to boost self-esteem and it helps you feel more comfortable with yourself." Every girl should think about coming out for cheerleading, like I said. It is a very great sport for people to get involved in and I think it could help a lot of people with their personal life. It gives you a safe place to go and not feel judged because you're around people with the same interests as you. Good luck to all those trying out. We wish you the best in your future cheering endeavors. Great job of supporting our red devils. Way to get on the devil level. |
Sports recap
By: Brittney Sweat Video: Geni Camp Editor: Hannah McCormick
As the 2016 school year is coming to an end, a recap for sports is a great way to reminisce on the memories.
A survey was given to high school students to reflect on the sports this year. The questions consisted of what sport did you enjoy most and why, what was the most memorable moment, and what was one thing you would want to change about your favorite sport. The sport that was most enjoyable was basketball with football coming in second place. Matthew Trent, head of the student section along with Katlyn Albert, said, "Basketball is my favorite sport because you stay entertained the whole game." The team captain of the girls varsity cheerleading team, Ariyon Gaither, said, "Basketball is my favorite sport because I love cheering for my boys in the stands." Zac Roberts, member of the JV team, Matthew Trent, Geni Camp and Kayla Petit said, "Beating Lewisville is the most memorable moment." That wasn't a surprise, knowing that Lewisville Lions are our rivals. There wasn't a consistent answer for what would be one thing you could change about your favorite sport, but the answers were really good. Respondents said things like, "the team should be more dedicated," "better chants," and "the season should be longer." Although we wish we could extend the season, all good things must come to an end. ALL sports will be missed. Look forward to next year's sports, hoping they will meet the expectations of this years. |
That’s a wrap!

Recently, the Great Falls student body received tragic news..Baseball season is over for us! After putting up a good fight, Great Falls fell 6-4 to Brasher Middle College on May 2nd, 2016. Although we're deeply saddened by the news, that didn't stop us Devils from showing our school spirit. We congratulated our boys on making it to the playoffs, along with having an extremely successful season.
For some of the boys, that was the last game they'll ever play in a Red Devil uniform. The rest of the team is upset to see so many of their teammates, and friends play their hearts out, only to not return next season.
In spite of all the "sadness," the Sports section of the Devils Daily was determined to find out just how many memories our boys have shared over just these past few months, and what made this team so special.
We tracked down the baseball boys to bring you the insight.
Sophomores Zac Roberts, Connor Henson, Koby Ruff, and, also, 8th grader, Russell Noland, had very similar replies. "I feel very sad about the season ending, but I'm ready to come back stronger than ever next year! I really loved being able to win more games this year, and also being able to spend more time with my teammates."
Also, beating C.A. Johnson and Whitmire, and their beach trip over spring break were among the list of their most memorable moments.
When we interviewed Senior, Deandre' Perry, he had some very detailed answers. Perry said, "I hate that the season is over, but I'm ready for these boys to come back next year and kick some serious tail! My teammates were my favorite thing about this season. We really came together as a team and a lot of new friendships were formed among us."
Perry later stated, "Not being able to play my senior night was the most memorable moment for me. I will regret it, but hey, things happen. Walking off the field for the last time as a Red Devil will stay with me for the rest of my life. I love my team and I am excited to see what they do in the future."
This season sure has been a good one. We will truly miss our seniors and will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of next season to watch our boys play their hearts out on that field.
That's all folks, it's been fun. Now, join us next season for some more Red Devil Baseball!

First round of play offs

Congratulations to the Great falls High School Varsity baseball team for making it to the first round of the playoffs. Way to go! The boys went to Ridge Spring Monetta for their first game and even though they didn't win, it was a close game. They had some great moments and the boys did their best.
Senior, De'Andre Perry, said, "The game went fairly well even though they have a young team. They also had some downfalls because of injuries but they still did pretty well." Perry continued, saying in the first inning he felt good about the game, however, the team got a little too comfortable and started to lose. Our Red Devils were down 5-1, but came back and tied the game in the fifth inning! Sophomore, Zac Roberts, said "I think we had a pretty good season overall, but in the game, we really need to work on fielding the ball better." Fellow sophomore, Connor Henson, said "We definitely won more games than expected. I've been surprised with our performance this season." All three boys agreed that the highlight of the game was when everyone started hitting and tied the game, something no one expected to happen. Even though our Devils didn't win their first playoff game, they did an excellent job coming back, challenging not only the other team but themselves. Great job guys, and way to get on the Devil Level, but don't forget it's not over until it's over! Our varsity team will be playing Brasher Middle College this Saturday in a final attempt to make it to the second round of playoffs. Come out and support your team! |
Meet your star athlete of the week: Riley Coyle
Writing, photos, and editing by Matthew Trent, Tierra Lynn, & Emilee Smarr
Drumroll please…….
Your athlete of the week is eighth grader, Riley Coyle. Coyle was nominated by her captain, Katlyn Albert. Coyle shows consistent dedication to the Varsity softball team. When interviewing our "Red Hot" athlete about how it felt to have her hard work being noticed, Coyle responded, "It feels great to know how hard I work and practice is noticed. I feel important and like the team needs me." The Devils Daily asked fellow teammate and peer, Piper Hopper, about Coyle as a player. Hopper responded, "She is a very important contributing factor to our team's success and she pushes us to do better." Head softball coach, Timothy Bennett, agreed with Hopper, saying, "Riley is a ferocious competitor and her being in the eighth grade starting on Varsity says it all." When you see this star athlete in the halls, congratulate her! Keep shining and way to get on the Devil Level, Riley! |

Lewisville puts the "L" in Devils: Softball and baseball recap
By Emilee Smarr, Matthew Trent, and Tierra Lynn, Great Falls High School, April 20th, 2016
Last night, our Red Devil softball and baseball teams took on the Lewisville Lions, and our teams also took two losses. While we may not have won, the games were definitely memorable for both teams and their crowds!
Our Lady Devils played their final in-season game against Lewisville, losing 3-13. The Devils had a strong first inning, but after that, the pressure of the rivalry settled in. Yet, our Lady Devils had some strong moments on the field last night! Senior, Katlyn Albert, started the game of by hitting an RBI, getting middle-school student, Allie Martin home. Senior, Morgan Lubojacky, also hit an RBI, and while she got out, she also sent Albert home. Clearly, our seniors had a great night, and it was made even better because it was their senior night!
Albert said, "I played the greatest game of my life last night and I had the best time. We were all singing and cheering and it truly showed the spirit of our team! I had the best night ever!" Win or lose, making the best out of everything is the Red Devil way. Congratulations on a season full of getting on the Devil Level, Lady Devils!
Our senior baseball players played in their final game against Lewisville last night, and even though we lost, we played an exciting game! No, really, the Devils and the Lions were tied 3-3 at the end of the first inning. The excitement escalated when the Lions got 5 runs in the second inning, but the Devils caught back up quickly. Senior, Pierce Funderburk, hit a 2-run homerun, which was also his second homerun of the year. The final score was 15-8, but our boys played to the finish! Thanks for Red Hot game, Red Devils!

Last Friday, April 8th, 2016 Great Falls High School's boys baseball team loaded up the bus after school and headed to Fairfield High School. This is one of the games everyone waits for all season. Fairfield is known for trash-talking and being good in all sports. But our boys turned everything around and showed everyone that they could do it. It was a very windy game, but it didn’t stop our team from showing those Griffins how to play Red Devils ball.
We interviewed fellow sophomore and left-fielder #2 Joshua Lewis on his reactions to last Friday's game. He said, "It was a very intense game because at any split second they were able to come back." He also bragged about getting a run in for the team. The team's bond is very close and they are very supportive. They cheered their teammates on and shouted throughout the whole game. They showed Red Devil spirit and played their hearts out pushing to get into the upcoming playoffs. Congratulations to the Boys' Baseball Team on their 8-2 win. Good job, boys, and continue to get on the Devil Level! |
Powderpuff 2016 Football Game
By: Sebastian Mendoza-pictures/videos and editing by: Sha'kiya cook, Katlyn Albert
April 8th Sha'Kiya Cook hosted her powder puff football game. It's a football game except played by girls, and cheerleading is done by boys. For many of the fans and the players, the game that happened recently was the most fun that happened all year.
We interviewed 11th grader Shane Roberts, the local cheerleader of the game and asked how fun was the game. He replied, "It was very fun today, it was the funniest thing we did all year." There were a lot of things that we all remember at the game. Most people have different memorable parts of the game, but the most memorable part was the cheerleaders performing. "My most memorable part of the game was whenever the cheerleaders made a pyramid," said Shane Roberts. We also interviewed Tierra Lynn who said the same thing about the cheerleaders. "The cheerleaders were the most memorable thing I'll remember, also Shane and his wig." But that’s not all, the game was also hard work for 12th grader and creator of the Powderpuff game, Shi'kiya Cook. We interviewed Shi'kiya Cook about preparations for her game. She replied, "Yeah, it was a lot because I had to make sure everyone had to get their shirt, and I had to make sure I had a schedule to make sure everything was in order." Thank you Sha'Kiya Cook for the fun Red Devil Friday! |
Baseball beach trip
By: Katlyn Albert, Sha'Kiya Cook & Sebastian Mendoza, Tuesday, April 5,2016
Our Varsity Baseball boys went to Myrtle Beach during our spring break to play in a tournament.
They stayed in a very nice house in Garden city where the boys had a blast. Even though they only won one game, the whole trip they played their butts off! We interviewed Deandre Perry, senior center fielder, and asked him how he thought his team did,"I think we did good because we worked harder than we have all season especially against the bigger teams we had to play at the beach." Perry also mentioned how much fun he had with his teammates. He said "Yes, I did very much enjoy it because we bonded well as a team and came together to come back after we had 3 losses." Remember Red Devils to continue to cheer on your Red devil baseball team! They have a home game on Thursday and an away game in Fairfield central on Friday. Show up and show out! |
March Madness? March Madness
Written by Geni Camp Videos by: Breanna Hunter/Tierra Lynn Editor: Tierra Lynn Great Falls High school March 23, 2016
Recently, March Madness started. It is a competition between 64 teams who are all competing against one another for the NCAA championship. For many people, building a bracket is the best part of this event. You select the team(s) you want to win and hope that your bracket survives throughout the competition. If it does, you may win a cash prize and, of course, bragging rights! Few people have ever had a perfect bracket, so the race was on this year to see who it would be. Though no one at the school had that perfect bracket, they sure had some opinions about March Madness! Check out the video below for more information and make sure to watch March Madness to see who takes home the trophy. Will it be your team this year? |
Zaxby's supports Great Falls!

Philip Leach , Great falls High school athletic trainer, was approached at Zaxby's in Richburg, SC by a worker saying that Lewisville High school was participating in a Zaxby's fundraiser and was curious as to why GFHS wasn't! The fundraiser was to pick a day and 10% of total sales will go toward the Sports at GFHS.
Monday, March 21 from 5pm-8pm Great Falls High will be participating in the fundraiser. All you have to do is show up to Zaxbys in Richburg, buy your meal, and eat. It's so simple! Leach said, " The fundraiser will help buy new uniforms, pay for travel expenses, referees renovations, and athletic training expenses." Timothy Bennett, GFHS softball coach said, "I think the Zaxby's fundraiser is a good idea, hopefully it will help raise money, even a little bit counts, and with the money I get I will be using it to get more training tools for the softball team." Be there or be square! Way to get on the Devil level Leach! |

Recently, the softball team has been on a winning streak. With a record of 5-1, we're extremely proud of our Lady Devils. With all their hard work and dedication they've overcome obstacles and become more of a team this year. Last Friday, all their hard work paid off and they were able to defeat C.A. Johnson with scores of 16-0 and 18-2. When interviewed, starting pitcher Riley Coyle said, "Being so young and already starting has made me very proud of all my hard work. This team is so much fun and they're like my family. I hope we're able to go to the playoffs this year and win as many games as possible!" Coach Bennett also added, "The girls have become more of a team and have learned to cooperate more to win more games. I hope we go all the way this year because it would make our team, our school, and our community very proud!" The Lady Devils next game is this Friday, at Mcbee. We wish them the best of luck in this game, and all of their future endeavors. Great job ladies. Way to get on the devil level! |

Great falls high school baseball team's first season game occurred yesterday at 6:00pm. The boys played Whitmire at home.
We asked some players how they felt about the game. Russell Noland said, "I felt very good about the game and I was ready to get out there and play my hardest." The boys played hard and they tied the game close to the end and went into extra innings as well. Even though the outcome of the game was not a win, we believe they did their best. Senior, Pierce Funderburk, showed team spirit by complementing his fellow Senior, De 'Andre Perry, by saying, "Dee made some excellent diving catches to help us [try and] win the game." The Devils Daily interviewed, 12th grader Morgan Lubojacky, about her project March Madness which is March 4th.
Lubojacky is doing March Madness for her senior project. She will be raising money for the varsity basketball team because she thinks they deserve it!
Lubojacky told the Devils Daily that as of right now there will be 57 participants attending the assembly March 4th, but people will be paying at the door and others are going around the school to collect money.
Helping Lubojacky with her project is Mrs. Mitzie Renwick and Coach Jimmy Duncan, and she is happy that they were helping her. She said they've helped her so much along the way and has given her great ideas to help her senior project come together.
Lubojacky said, "Planning an event is not something I would recommend to upcoming classmen for a senior project because it is a lot of work, but the outcome is worth it."
She thinks that her Senior project will be a success because it will give the students something fun to do and help raise money while doing it.

Hoops for Heart
Story by: Dixie Roberts-pictures and editing by: Lydia Mills and Camryn Patterson-Great Falls High School-February 26, 2016
Hoops for Heart was a senior project done by Lathenya Frederick. She did the senior project because she thought it would be good for younger kids to learn about heart problems.
Frederick said that she thinks she raised enough money because some kids actually care. She was happy about her senior project because the kids cared and helped a lot.
Ms. Minter and Ms. Freeman helped Frederick with her senior project and Ms. Minter was her mentor. Ms. Minter helped her a lot with her senior project to help her do well, helping her organize and plan the event.
The Devils Daily asked Frederick how she felt about her senior project and she said, ”I felt happy that I could help someone and help their heart.” She felt happy to help people because with the money she raised she could’ve helped a lot of people.

Girl's Track team Or not?
Story By: Lydia Mills-Photos and Editing by: Camryn Patterson and Dixie Roberts-Great Falls High School-February 24, 2016
On February 23, the Devils Daily interviewed the girl's track team coach, 1st Sergeant Clarence Greeno, and team captain, Lathenya Frederick or 'Lele', about if there is going to be a 2016 girls track team.
The Devils Daily was unsure what was happening to the girl's track team so, we had to do some investigating. Greeno told the Devils Daily about the big deal, "Right now we don’t know until after school Wednesday February 24." Both Greeno and Frederick are in doubt that there might not be able to recruit enough people before the season starts. In order to compete, they need at least a team of six. Six people doesn’t seem like many, but it has gotten harder and harder for Greeno to get people to join. Greeno also told the Devils Daily that there is a problem with recruiting because he said there are girls in shape who could go to State, but choose to stay home instead. Currently, the plans for the girls track if there isn't a girls track team, they would look at his recruiting procedures and get middle school kids. Economy is also a problem, but he would hope things turn out better next year. |
Red Devil recap: Varsity baseball and softball scrimmages
BY: Sha'Kiya Cook, Emilee Smarr and Katlyn Albert, Great Falls High School, February 19th, 2016
On Wednesday night, the Great Falls High School Varsity baseball team played in a scrimmage against Indianland High School. The boys played hard and showed off their skills all seven innings. Despite losing by one run, the final score being 7-6, the Red Devils led the scoreboard for all six innings and a majority of the seventh. The scrimmage allowed the coaches and players to figure out who needs to play where and what they need to improve on in practice.
The Great Falls High School Varsity softball team played in a scrimmage against Fairfield Central on Thursday night. Even though the Lady Devils lost, the girls played a great game and showed the Lady Griffins that they were ready for game time. There was some outstanding work in the outfield in Thursday night's scrimmage, with all balls being caught except for one. Outfielder and senior, Katlyn Albert, said, "My team played their hearts out and will continue to do so throughout the season."
We also have a Star Athlete of the Week, senior, Pierce Funderburk. On Wednesday night's scrimmage against Indianland, while all of our Red Devils did a great job, Funderburk hit a homerun off of his first pitch in the first inning. Unaware of being named Star Athlete of the Week at the time of his interview, the senior told us how he felt about his outstanding performance in the game.

Seniors play the final game of the season and their high school careers
By Emilee Smarr, Katlyn Albert, and Sha'Kiya Cook, Great Falls High School, February 10, 2016
Last night, the junior varsity, girls' varsity, and boys' varsity basketball teams took on McBee at home in the final game of the season. It was an emotional night not just for our seniors, but the basketball team, parents, and students as well; it's never easy saying goodbye to basketball season, but it's even harder to say goodbye to our Red Devil Seniors.
The Junior Varsity Red Devils won their game against McBee with a score of 35-32. Freshmen, Telonte Coleman, Connor Henson, and Zac Roberts were a few of the players who made major contributions to the Red Devil victory last night. If you see a JV Red Devil in the hallway, make sure to tell them congratulations on their win!
The girls' varsity basketball team gave an exciting performance, going into overtime against the McBee Black Panthers. The Lady Red Devils fell under the excitement, and the McBee ladies took the lead, winning the game. Lewisville vs Great Falls thursday game
By Emilee Smarr, Katlyn Albert, and Sha'kiya Cook, Great Falls High School, February 5th, 2016
Last night the Red Devil basketball teams took on the Lewisville Lions. While our boys and girls might have lost, they still played great games and definitely got on the Devil Level! Earlier in the week, students were asked some predictions about not only the outcome of the game, but standout athletes, and more.
The Lady Red Devils were close to the win, trailing behind the Lions by 6 points, the final score being 56-50. For a majority of the game, our girls' basketball team stayed neck-in-neck with the opposing teams, but Lewisville's Amber Bass scored the final shots it took to win.
Our Red Devil student body predicted that Alexis Emerson, junior, would be the girls' Great Falls Vs. Lewisville basketball game standout athlete. During the third quarter, Alexis Patterson, teammate, assisted Emerson in catching up to Lewisville's 15-point lead. Last night, no one drove the ball down the court quite like Alexis Emerson!
The boys' Red Devil basketball team came close to beating the Lions as well with a final score of 57-54. Warren Sanders also shocked his team by coming out onto the court to play after being out due to injury for three games. Fueled by the rivalry, our boys never stopped striving for the win!
For the boys' Red Devil standout athlete, students believed that Deandre Green, junior, would turn up the heat on the court. Boy, were they right! Green shot a 3-point buzzer beater just before going into halftime. He dribbled the ball down the court effortlessly despite Lewisville's good pressure defense. Green also racked up a large amount of assists, as well as steals!
While a majority of students believed that Great Falls would win, as well as blow Lewisville out, the Red Devils were just on the edge of a win! The best part is that the Red Devils have a chance to get the dub again tonight at Lewisville! Make sure that you come sit with the best student section in Chester County, as proven at last night's game! Let's go Devils!

It's official Red Devils, your sports star of the week is…. Trevion McCrorey! Trevion, better known as Trey, is a senior and a varsity basketball player. As the season winds down and the number of injuries rise, Trey never fails to step up to the challenge and play his heart out. From the stands, it's clear to see that Trey is the definition of a team player and loves being out on the court.
Sophomore and fellow varsity basketball player, Tommy Belk, said, "Trey is a good teammate and a good role model. He contributes by scoring at least two or three points a game, getting around five rebounds, and always being dedicated."
Upon hearing the announcement of Trey being named Star Athlete of the Week, Coach Smith, boys' varsity basketball coach, said, "Over the years, Trey has become an outstanding basketball player. Trey has worked hard on improving his fundamental skills."
The Devils Daily gave Trey the good news and got a big smile in return. "It feels good because all of the hard work I've been putting in at practice and games is being recognized," Trey said.
If you see Trey in the hallway, make sure to congratulate him for not only being Star Athlete of the Week, but also getting on the Devil Level! Congratulations, Trey!

Patterson puts forth much effort to make sure her team gets noticed every game. Alexis steps up every time she is needed and adds points to the score by shooting some of her well-known three-pointers. Alexis Patterson seemed to be star-struck when we told her the good news. She said, "It feels great, I'm honored and I now feel like a pro." We decided to ask Hayva Trotter a few questions about Alexis.
