Biology with Ms. Fulks
By: Tiambre Talford - September 15, 2015
This is Ms. Megan
Fulks, our amazing biology teacher. Ms.
Fulks is from Columbia, South Carolina.
She is a graduate of Spring Valley High School. She attended college at Winthrop University
in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Trying to
get to know her a bit more, Fulks was asked what is her favorite television
show. She replied, "I watch a variety of shows, so it's hard to
choose. But, I do enjoy watching soap
operas."
In her free time, Fulks enjoys spending time with family and friends, exercising, personal training, and officiating track and field and cross country meets. She says that she has always wanted to be a teacher and her mother could tell countless stories of her pretending to be a teacher and playing school.
In addition, Fulks was asked: if she could choose another career what would it be? She said, "I would be a sports medicine doctor. I love learning and teaching others about the human body." Fulks was also asked what inspired her to want to become a teacher. "My love for learning and helping others inspired me to become a teacher. As a teacher you continue to learn every day and being able to share that with students is a wonderful thing. I often tell my students one of your daily goals should be to learn something new, content knowledge and real life lessons. Knowledge is power."
Fulks describes herself as wise, determined, and real.
Michael Plank, one of Fulks' 4th block students was asked what he thought about her as a teacher. He stated, "She is a great teacher and she has encouraged me to learn about biology and science all together." If she could give any advice to students, Fulks would quote Eric Thomas. "When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you will be successful."

What would we do without her...Introducing Mrs. Buchanan
By:Tiambre Talford - September 10, 2015
Do you know how
unorganized this school would be without our amazing secretary to keep
everything running smoothly? That's right - it would be pretty bad. Say hello
to Mrs. Karen Buchanan, the Great Falls High School secretary. Buchanan is from
Lockhart, South Carolina. She attended
three different high schools: Finley High School, Brockman High School, which
was one of the first schools to integrate, and Chester Senior High School where
she graduated. Buchanan spent her college life at York Technical College.
When asked what she likes to do in her free time, she replied, "I like to work in my flower garden, shop, and travel." In addition, she also has particular tastes in music. She stated, "I love the blues, and old school hip hop." Buchanan's favorite place to travel is the beach for relaxation. She says when she travels anywhere else it is for her knowledge.
Buchanan was also asked what are some words she would use to describe herself and she said, ''energetic, dedicated, loyal, and honest.''
When considering her career, she noted that her father inspired her to be a secretary. He bought her first typewriter and ever since then she knew she wanted to be a secretary.
Buchanan's office is always busy with students coming in for many reasons. She works very hard during the day by answering the phone, making sure no one gets in who doesn't belong in the school, and making sure everything runs smoothly.

Profile of the Week: There's a new art teacher in town
By: Tiambre Talford - September 8, 2015
A lot of new
technology, ideas, and faces have come about this year. Meet one of those new faces, our new art
teacher, Mrs. Janet Hall. She is
originally from Lancaster, South Carolina where she also completed high
school. After high school, Hall spent
some of her college life at Clemson and graduated from Winthrop University in
Rock Hill, South Carolina.
When asked what made her choose teaching as her main career, she replied, "I really love working and interacting with students." She also said, "I have had many teachers who were good influences in my life .''
In addition, she was asked if she could give her students one motivational quote that she thought would inspire her students. She stated three quotes one by Pablo Picasso, Paul Gardener, and Gurdon Woods which were, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up,'' "A painting is never finished - it simply stops in interesting places," and "Art is an idea. It is not enough to draw, paint, and sculpt. An artist should be able to think."
Mrs. Hall's classroom is filled with artwork done by her hardworking students.
Moving away from the teaching side of her life, Hall stated, ''I like to go to Clemson football games, spend time with my family and Chihuahua, exercise, go to museums, and to do a little of my own artwork."
Welcome to Great Falls, Mrs. Hall!

Profile of the Week: Band superstar Joseph Miller
By: Nauria Wilmore - September 4, 2015
This is Mr. Joseph
Miller's first year teaching at fantastic Great Falls High School. Miller is
from Columbia, South Carolina, where he attended college at University of South
Carolina. He also attended the University of South Carolina Aiken, where he focused
on Music Education and Performance. When asked why he wanted to be an band
teacher he replied, "I love music and it keeps me young."
One of Millers students was interviewed about attending his class and noted that being in his class is very fun and that because of this she plans on being in band for the rest of her high school career.
The band room is decorated with art and band awards from over the years. Walking into the band room even made me want to join band. The atmosphere is overwhelming. Instruments and songs were being played, his students were enjoying themselves by learning new things, and students were collaborating with one another. Marching Band is an awesome extra-curricular activity to be in and it is never too late to join!

There's a new kid on the block: Say hello to Mr. Gregory Koehler
By: Kaylee Lloyd - August 27, 2015
This year is Mr.
Gregory Koehler's first year teaching History at Great Falls High. He is originally
from Michigan, but ended up in Charleston, SC where he completed middle and
high school in North Charleston. Mr. Koehler graduated from Winthrop University
in Rock Hill with an undergraduate degree in history and then immediately
returned back to school to get his Masters of Art in Teaching.
When asked why he wanted to be a teacher he replied, "I had awesome, positive influences in my life and most of them came from teaching." He grew up around many individuals whom he felt were less fortunate than himself. He said he had a bigger advantage than them and he never thought it was fair. Koehler's main purpose in becoming a teacher is to make sure students are in a supportive atmosphere and have someone there to help them out when needed. His classroom is covered in posters and maps that help the students get a feel of what they are learning. Mr. Koehler is also known as "Coach K" to the football team and assists coaching the defensive line. If you would like to know more about Mr. Koehler or need help studying up on your history, you can reach him at [email protected] or say hello in room 104! |
